What is Aging-in-Place?

In plain English, aging-in-place means remaining in one's home safely, independently, and comfortably, regardless of age, income, or ability level. It means the pleasure of living in a familiar environment throughout one's maturing years, and the ability to enjoy the familiar daily rituals and the special events that

enrich all our lives. It means the reassurance of being able to call a h

ouse a "home" for a lifetime.

(Thanks to the NAHB for this definition)

We all are getting older, and as homeowners we should think about how our home will meet our needs if we want to stay as long as possible in our home when we can't quite get around the way we can right now.

- Is there a bedroom on the main floor that we could use if necessary?

- Are doorways wide enough for a wheelchair?

- Does the kitchen offer good accessibility?

- Can we get from our car into the house?

- How does the bathroom meet our bathing needs later in life?

These are all factors that a CAPS Specialist can help you not only think about, but solve.

What is a Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS)?

The NAHB Remodelers Council, in collaboration with the AARP, NAHB Research Center, and NAHB Seniors Housing Council, developed this program to provide comprehensive, practical, market-specific information about working with older and maturing adults to remodel their homes for aging-in-place.
